The PEAK PP 2011, Andrew Palooza & the Stanley Cup!
Wow, it’s been a whirlwind of a past few days. Just got home from Mexico Sunday night, got back into the swing of things (kind of) on Monday and Tuesday and today the Vancouver Canucks are playing in their first Stanley Cup Final appearance in 17 years. Not sure if things could be busier and/or more exciting!
What else was exciting this week? Well a few things:
- One of my personal favourites, My Morning Jacket, released their latest album Circuital; their first album in 3 years
- Sasquatch! Festival 2011 just wrapped up and featured a ton of fantastic bands and artists (again, I was not able to attend)
- The Winnipeg Jets are back!!
These things are all great, but for me, the most exciting musical aspect of this week/month was that Vancouver radio station 100.5 the PEAK announced their PEAK Performance Project Top 20 Artists. (For more info on what the PEAK Performance Project is, check here).
The Top 20 are (in alphabetical order):
- Acres of Lions
- Ashleigh Eymann
- Behind Sapphire
- Current Swell
- David Vertesi
- Fields of Green
- Hilary Grist
- Jasper Sloan Yip
- Lindsay Bryan
- Redgy Blackout
- The Belle Game
- The Boom Booms
- The Matinee
- The Never Surprise
- The Oh Wells
- 41st and Home
Repeat contestants from last year feature 41st and Home, Acres of Lions and Behind Sapphire, but they are in very stiff competition with a the other 17 acts in this year’s top 20. David Vertesi, Rococode, Current Swell and Treelines are already in playlist rotation on a few radio stations in the lower mainland and Victoria. Rococode haven’t even released as much as an EP as of yet, but have been one of the biggest local buzz bands of 2011. So who will crack the top 5? You’ll have to wait until autumn to find out, but there’s no doubt that it could be any of these bands, as there always seems to be a few surprises along the way in the PPP so STAY TUNED!
I want to bring to your attention one other special event that will be taking place June 11th at the Red Room (same location as the West Coast Pop concert series) in Vancouver: Andrew Palooza!
Andrew Palooza is an event that has been organized by my friend Scott Graham of food blog What’s For Lunch BC for a friend of his with multiple sclerosis. The event is a fundraiser to raise $7,000 for Andrew Kristoff so he can have an expensive treatment for his MS in Seattle. The treatment is called “The Liberation Treatment” and you can read more about it, and Andrew, here.
What’s so special about this event is that it’s being completely organized and operated by people who are not making a dime and giving much of their time for the event, all for someone else. The Red Room is not charging us for using the facility; Scott has been working hard for over a month now to ensure that word gets around and that 500 tickets for this event get sold, and the 4 musical guests and comedians are all performing for good karma, not money.
He’s been busting hard to get some great talent to play this show to entice people all the more to buy a ticket and make it out. The musical acts playing Andrew Palooza are PEAK Performance Alumni and 2011 Top 20 finalists Behind Sapphire, PEAK Performance Project 2010 Alumni Bodhi Jones, the fantastically talented Nadia von Hahn and the hard-rockn’ Sweetheart.
And last but not least, the event will also be hosted by the beautiful, former JRFM and PEAK DJ Carmen Cruz! The great thing about this event is that even if you cannot come out and support it physically, you can still purchase a $20 ticket here and support Andrew’s cause. Every ticket sold is $20 closer to getting to the goal, and that’s the whole point.
Plus, there’s no hockey game on that night, so you won’t be missing any Canucks and/or Bruins action!
Go Canucks Go!!
